Light as a building material: St. Trinitatis in Leipzig

From the centre to the urban periph-ery and back: the eventful history of the Roman Catholic provost church pf St. Trinitas in Leipzig was brought to a happy conclusion through the new building by architects Schulz and Schulz that was consecrated in May 2015 After the historic church dating from 1847 had been largely destroyed in the Second World War and the ruins then blown up by the SED regime it took until 1982 before the church community received a new church, financed by the West. Due to political pressure, however, this church had to be located in a suburb. And because the building had a number of defects from the very start the parish community, which is still growing, decided to give up their unpopular church and to make a new start in the city centre. A limited entry competition was set up for the new church and parish centre which the local architects Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz won against numerous well-known competitors.
