Hidden between the tradition Tainan countryside, the project is a living space for a monk.It combines the physicality and spirituality, and provides a space for user to free themselves from their consumer mechanisms. Zen is a practical experience for nothingness, it could happen anytime and anywhere. No couch, no TV, there is only walls and sunken floor for sitting and lying. Without the common objects of a house, what is the minimum of living? We create a kind of minimum which is different from "form follow function", which the spirituality is regarded higher than the function in two ways: spatial organization and materiality. Firstly, the spatial organization is initiated from the abstract geometry; the courtyard in the center and the curve wall form a symbolic image. Different from a familiar housing floor plan which are often equipped with 'three bedrooms + two living rooms'; the Ayni House project implements 'three yards + two entrances' to array the spatial flow of living and meditation areas: 'three yards' - dooryard, courtyard and backyard which act as a light vessel and wind aisle; 'two entrances' 一 entry towards Zen yard built by sensory perceptual experiences. Are tangible living spaces likely to sublimate into spiritual meditation realm? Secondly, this project explores the potentialof concrete walls by using different templates to create different textures. Rough and smooth finishes are created according to the spaces: some part is rough for the shade of changing daylight, some part is smooth for the user's movement.
