The Che-lung-pu fault line, symbolic of the biggest catastrophe in the last hundred years of Taiwanese history, the 921 Earthquake, runs through the 400-meter track of Wufong Sports Park, leaving an unusual post-earthquake landform feature. This location was chosen to be the Earthquake Education Park because it is in the vicinity of the half-destroyed school and community where the second phase construction will start. It is also a perfect area to visually demonstrate what happened during the earthquake. The architecture of rebirth is brought about by this very topographic feature: it aims to reshape the space of the shattered earth, to record the event and to provide a spatial memory of the event for the whole world. The design concept and architectural elements echoes the landform features: precast boards symbolize the mutated track; the membrane signifies the temporary shelter tents right after the earthquake; the cables which connect the upper and lower bases symbolize a suture on the wound. The grassy slope underneath the membrane, with the zigzag arrangement of the pillar bases and the stay cable, creates an illusory space where the fault line runs through.
