For the renovation of the former Daibiru Honkan (completed in 1925) whose magnificent decor has long been loved by everyone as a state-of-the-art office building, we aimed to inherit the former building's design to the maximum possible extent using modern craftsmanship in order to impart a historical depth to the city-scape. We conducted careful inspection, performance testing, etc. on the former building, and after verifying the possibility of reuse, 150,000 bricks, ornately decorated stone columns, etc. were carefully removed one by one and re-mounted on the new framework. By reproducing the interior decor through reusing or recreating materials such as floor tiles, etc., we restored its splendor including the former entrance hall with its handiwork. With attention to the transformation and contrast between the old and new scenes, and in the newly added high-rise office area, we installed sashes with stone uprights having a sunlight shielding effect glassed-in elevator shafts, etc. to create open spaces filled with natural light. Sufficient open space around the base allows terraced shops to welcome passers-by.
