Mueller's history of developing innovative solutions to the problems caused by pressure variations in the water distribution system dates to before the first issue of Journal AWWA. In 1882, Hieronymus Mueller was issued US Patent #251726A for a water pressure regulator. In 1913, the company adapted the valves to help stop errant ships from ramming gates in the Panama Canal. Even today, 95 very large Mueller regulating valves protect the locks of the Panama Canal.
