Data Quality Tools, Methods Leads To New Capabilities In Enterprise Data Management

Data quality is an important first step to a well master data management (MDM) strategy, and good data quality has become both the driller's and the data manager's most valuable asset. Since well data can pass through at least 50 hands during their asset lifecycle and across a number of applications, businesses are increasingly aware of the high risk of misplacing and misrepresenting asset information at any stage of a project. For example, one major operator estimates that more than 50 percent of its well data have been lost or misplaced within databases and project files. Well master data management is an evolving approach to exploration, drilling and production enterprise data management. It is not a repository of well information only used by part of an organization. Although often referred to as a well master list, a well database for geology and geophysics is not what we are referring to. MDM is not a data "mart" or a data "warehouse" of well information, nor is it an enterprise-wide, single-source repository. In other words, just because the user has a list of wells, it does not mean he has master data management.
