The left Allison V-1710 was shut down and the propeller feathered when the pilot of Lockheed P-38J-10-LO 42-67987/ N2*P elected to belly land the Lightning at Honnington, England, on 2 May 1944. In order to keep control and flying speed, he was running a high power setting on the right Allison and upon impact the prop and reduction gear casing separated from the engine. Note how the camouflage paint was stripped from the nose and the aluminum polished. This was an attempt to deceive Luftwaffe fighters into thinking this was an unarmed F-5 photo-recon variant. After useful parts were stripped from the airframe, the P-38 was probably scrapped.
