THE LIVES OF VP981

Since the day in 1946 when it emerged from the de Havilland factory with constructor's number 04205, Devon C2 VP981 has had a varied career. Having first been stationed at Hendon, it was then assigned to the Air Forces Western Europe Communications Flight, based at Melun-Villaroche near Paris. During this time ACM Sir Basil Embry, commander of Allied Air Forces Central Europe, used it as his personal transport. In 1985 VP981 joined the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as a support aircraft. After the arrival of the flight's Dakota, ZA947, prior to the 1994 season it was found that there were not enough groundcrew to look after a bigger fleet and VP981 was declared surplus to requirements.
