摘要

Administering prophylactic antibiotics prior to surgery has demonstrated efficacy in the prevention of surgical site infections. As such, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends preoperative antibiotic administration prior to most orthopaedic procedures [ , ]. Indeed, perhaps no measure other than aseptic technique has done more to reduce the risk of complications or death following surgery. Still, infection remains one of the most-devastating complications following many orthopaedic interventions. Considerable efforts—ranging from intraoperative normothermia and increased inhalational oxygen supplementation to tighter perioperative glucose control—have helped maintain gradual progress in this area.
