Meanwhile, it has to be admitted that no one can afford to neglect the influence of traditions, cultures and values of American Southern society on him. He held a strong feeling for everything in Southern society, from people to scenery, from materials to thinking. He had a keen insight into the gravity of the racist situation, but had no courage to present the ultimate solution. It is his vague attitude that led to the limitation of the black figures, especially the faithful black servants in his works. Consequently, the limitation conflicts with his antirac-ism.
