In this novel, “eye” is an important image. The peculiar view of the “eye” reveals that human nature is under oppression and monitoring. This kind of “gaze” exists both present and absent. In modern society, the communication among people cannot stay away from “gaze”. We gaze at others to peep their minds. At the same time, we are always gazed by others. Gaze, in this sense, does not merely mean seeing. It involves the power relationship between the two who gaze and be gazed. Through the analysis of the image “eye” in The Scarlet Letter on Gaze Theory, we can review this kind of gaze in today’s world which not many people research on.
