Voices of Their Own:On the Construction of Black Female Characters in The Bluest Eye

In American cultural and literary traditions, the black females are often marginalized and stereotyped as a voiceless dim backdrop. This paper argues that The Bluest Eye notes the process of voice deprivation, and records the black females' own stories to give them back a unique voice of their own in order to construct new black female characters. This paper analyzes the tragic life of Pecola Breedlove and explores possible ways of speaking out.
