缠足习俗起源于北宋，没落于民国。不同的历史发展阶段，对缠足习俗产生影响的主要因素也大不相同。宋代时以小脚为美的审美观念，驱使缠足从理想走向实践；元代是少数民族建立的政权，汉人的民族认同感和自豪感是缠足习俗发展的最重要动力；明代时缠足习俗才真正与伦理道德联系起来；清代统治者屡禁缠足而不止，不仅有汉人的抵抗和缠足习俗早已深入人心等观念上的原因，还有禁令不彻底，措施不合理等制度上的原因。近代西方文明的传入，社会的大变革，终结了中国缠足的时代。%The custom of foot-binding was originated in the Northern Song Dynasty and disappeared in the period of the repub lic of China. At different stages of development, the main factors that have an impact on the custom of foot binding were also different. In the Song Dynasty, small feet was considered as one of the aesthetic concepts, which drove the ideal to the practice; During the Yuan Dynasty, established by minority people, the Han Chinese’s ethnic identity and pride were the most important driving forces for the development of the custom of foot-binding; In the Ming Dynasty, foot-binding and ethics were truly con nected; Qing rulers repeatedly banned foot-binding but it didn’t work, not only because the resistance of Han Chinese and the custom was deep to people’s heart, but also because there was no complete ban ,with measures unreasonable. Due to the in coming of modern western civilization and the big social change, the era of Chinese foot-binding was ended.
