It is difficult to eradicate bacteria completely with single antibiotic because of serious drug resistance. The combination of low-frequency ultrasound technology and antibiotics could enhance the bactericidal or bacteriostatic effect of antibiotics on both planktonic bacteria and bacterial biofilm. The primary mechanism may be cavitation effect. Currently, low-frequency ultrasound technology has been applied to local infection treatment. As a non-invasive and targeted therapy, low-frequency ultrasound technology has great potential use in clinic.
