Transcending media: Adapting the dance production 'Asylum of Spoons' from stage to film.

This thesis presents the pre-production materials used to adapt the dance production of Asylum of Spoons (2004) from the stage into a dance film. As a successful dance film, Asylum of Spoons (2005) received a broadcast license, full financing, award nominations and international festival distribution.;This document is directed to those serious dance film creators and students who, like myself, prefer to develop personalized strategies and interpretations as opposed to standardized text-based screenplays. In deconstructing the process of creating Asylum of Spoons, I hope to have made a document that is accessible, laid out sequentially for the reader and practical to use.;In structuring my discussion, I focus on the primary documents---treatment, screenplay and shot list---and the secondary documents---storyboard, drawings, camera movement diagrams, dramatic arch and rehearsal and production schedules---used to shoot the film. I include such secondary documents in Appendices A through N. These materials are not intended as a "how-to" book on creating dance film, but rather as a case history for its creation. They offer a constructive window onto the preparations taken to create a dance film work. Also included are reflective writings that discuss, in greater depth, my process of decision making. I have selected a number of sections that were created specifically for the film and some that were adapted from stage to film, which translated into scenes. I then continue the analysis for transforming these scenes, plus a few others, from the screenplay into the shot list.
