The investigated linguistic problem focuses on a current sociopolitical issue: Many Russian-German adolescents do not feel at home in Germany after they and their parents left the former Soviet Union by hundreds of thousands in recent years.;Ever since emigrating to Russia after 1763 in pursuit of better conditions of life, the Russian-Germans managed to maintain their German language and culture even as an isolated ethnic minority in a multicultural Soviet-Russian society. Arriving in modern Germany now, the "returnees" find it difficult to cope with a society they believe is simply different from their own way of life. This alienation unavoidably leads to a lack of identity.;Sharing the view of 19th-century linguist and philosopher Wihelm von Humboldt and his conception of a collective "Weltansicht"/"perception of the world" in each language, the author is convinced that the grave discomfort of the newly arrived citizens can be attributed to the existence of divergent connotations in the same language. For this reason, she considers it an essential linguistic task to determine the extent of this divergence as exemplified in three selected lexical fields: individual, family, German language.;In a case study, during a period of four weeks, Russian-German and West German students of the same school, aged 15 to 20, were given two questionnaires which were composed of mixed questions taken from both sociocultural backgrounds. The statements centered around the selected lexical fields and were based on previous observations and numerous personal interviews. The goal of the concept was to visualize attitudes as an "internal state of readiness".;The results established proof of the significance of language as a marker of underlying affective aspects: The connotative semantic space--the "Weltansicht" expressed in the chosen lexical fields--is divergent from one group to the other despite the fact that they share the same language. An essential first step in overcoming this mental barrier involves a profound effort to further the exchange of knowledge among the two groups as to the nature of their divergent sociocultural background.
