摘要

Women have increased their participation in all levels of education over the past 150 years. Research focusing on understanding women's participation in graduate education, however, has been limited to descriptive studies of enrollment by field or studies explaining the employment patterns of academic women. Little has been done to evaluate the link between women's participation and resource levels in particular fields of graduate education. This dissertation examines the relationship between the proportion of women and resource levels under current, ideal, and growth conditions at a mid-western Carnegie Research University II.;The importance of understanding the links between the proportion of women within and the levels of resources for particular fields lies in ultimately achieving stated goals of diversity, which are a prominent emphasis in the early part of the twenty-first century. The cultural devaluation of women and women's work is an often unrecognized source of institutional sexism, which is manifested in this case by the lower levels of resources in female dominated departments compared to the levels of resources in male dominated departments.;Seven hypotheses are tested on three data sets (two university generated and one nationally collected). The first two hypotheses demonstrate that different fields of study have differing proportions of women, similar to traditional enrollment patterns, and the sample university has patterns of enrollment similar to the national population. The next two hypotheses indicate that diversity goals are not being met under current conditions, but achieving some diversity goals is anticipated when ideal conditions of enrollment are considered. The next three hypotheses state that the resource levels are expected to be lower in sex integrated and female dominated departments than in male dominated departments. Support is found for all the hypotheses. Solutions to address differential resource levels are offered and policy implications are discussed.
