A survey of the katydid (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) species of the Maya Mountain region of Belize.

This study is a contribution to the limited knowledge of katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) in Belize. While six katydid subfamilies potentially occur in Belize, only five historical records of katydid species exist for the country. My survey of four sites within the Maya Mountain region resulted in the collection of 217 specimens belonging to 28 putative species. At least 25 of these species represent new records for Belize. Only one of them, Anaulacomera laticauda (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878), has been previously recorded in the country.;This collection resulted in a preliminary checklist of katydid species found in Belize and established a set of reference data for the community of katydid species within the Maya Mountain region. In addition, this study has improved our knowledge of the range and natural history of neotropical katydids. This study also provides a rich database of anatomical images, including scanning electron micrographs of stridulatory files.
