摘要

The geriatric population continues to grow and is the fastest growing segment of the population. Osteoarthritis is the number one cause of pain in geriatric individuals which can lead to functional limitation, deformity, and decreased activities of daily living. Total joint arthroplasty (replacement) is a suitable treatment alternative that has become increasingly popular. It is projected that by 2030, the demand for primary total knee arthroplasties will grow by 673 percent to 3.48 million procedures and the demand for primary total hip arthroplasty is estimated to grow by 174 percent to 572,000 procedures.;This study was undertaken to determine whether geriatric (age ≥65) total joint arthroplasty patients (total hip or total knee) who attend and do not attend a pre-operative education class prior to surgery differ in pre-operative and post-operative self-efficacy, pre and post operative anxiety and calmness levels. Do differences exist in total surgical in-patient satisfaction and patient satisfaction on the subsets of information transfer, nursing care, interaction with doctors, professional care, and hospital experience? Additionally, is there a difference in total surgical in-patient satisfaction among patients with the co-morbid condition of obesity (BMI ≥ 30) and those with a BM1 < 30?;Overall, the study revealed small impacts the hospital pre-operative education program had on patient self-efficacy, anxiety, and total surgical in-patient satisfaction. Total surgical in-patient satisfaction is related to interaction with doctors, self-efficacy, and professional care.
