Perceptions of coordination of rehabilitation services by patients receiving primary total hip or total knee arthroplasty.

The primary objective of this thesis was to describe patients' perceptions of the quality of the coordination of services in an acute care hospital setting, in the transfer to a rehabilitation hospital as well as home, and in their follow-up care following a primary total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Between April 2001 and March 2002, patients who had TJA surgery at St. Michael's Hospital (Toronto, Canada), and were discharged to an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, completed a questionnaire on their perceptions of the quality of coordination of rehabilitation services. Overall, the 153 patients indicated that they had a positive perception of the coordination of care, but identified areas for improvement. These areas included providing information about patients' rehabilitation and transfer processes and improving preparations for the actual transfer from the acute care hospital to rehabilitation as well as home. Improvements in these areas may advance the overall coordination of rehabilitation services.
