基于共选理论的近义词辨析——以absolutely,completely,totally,utterly为例

摘要

在英语词汇中，近义词占了很大一部分，因此，对近义词的学习和掌握是必要的。然而，很多近义词仅仅通过词典对应的解释很难辨别，这使得许多英语学习者误认为这些近义词可以在任何情况下互换，从而产出很多语法正确但语用或搭配错误的句子。因此，有必要探究一种科学、实际的近义词辨析方法，为英语教学提供指导。
　　本研究基于共选理论，运用扩展意义单位模型辨析了四个近义词：absolutely,completely,totally,utterly。在数据搜集和处理过程中，运用了美国当代英语语料库（COCA）以及语料库分析统计软件AntConc3.4.4w。数据分析和讨论共涉及五个方面，依次是词频分布、搭配、类连接、语义偏好和语义韵。
　　研究结果显示，absolutely，completely和totally在口语中更常用，而utterly在小说中更常用。就搭配而言，使用频率和互信息评分（MI）并非正比关系，absolutely和completely显著搭配词的使用频率虽然高于utterly，但使用频率和互信息评分的值均排在前列的搭配词数量却少于 utterly。就类连接而言，completely和totally均有五种类连接，而absolutely和utterly只有四种并且有一种不相同。此外，研究结果显示，“ADV+ADJ”,“ADV+V”和“V+ADV”是四个近义词所共有且最常用的类连接形式。就语义偏好而言，所研究的四个近义词差异很大，与absolutely相比，completely，totally和utterly的语义偏好范畴明显较广。就语义韵而言，absolutely，totally和 utterly都显示出明显的消极语义韵，而completely却显示出明显的中性语义韵。另外，研究结果表明，absolutely的中性语义韵最少，totally和utterly的积极语义韵最少。这些研究结果不仅为英语教学提供了启示，也为词典编撰提供了启发。
