Since Obesity induces insulin resistance (IR), the key etiologic defect of type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM),obesity-diabetes would be reduced if only obesity could be controlled.Although, nowadays Mefforminmonotherapy is one of the main options for T2DM in obese patients with the result of 5% weight loss onaverage, adequate weight control in all patients cannot be achieved. In this way, some additional therapieswith weight loss therapeutic effect, such as acupuncture, may improve its effectiveness. We designed thisrandomized clinical trial to compare therapeutic effect of Metformin monotherapy with Metformin andacupuncture combined therapy on weight loss and IR among overweight/obese T2DM patients, tounderstand whether acupuncture can be an insulin-sensitizer and its therapeutic mechanism. Our resultsshow that Metformin and acupuncture combined therapy has significant P-value (P<0.05) in measuredindexes such as BW, BMI, FBS, FINS, HOMA, IL-6, TNF α,Leptin, Adiponectin, GLP-1, Resistin,Serotonin, FFAs,Triglyceride, LDL, HDL, and Ceramides, except CRP.Consequently Mefformin andacupuncture combined therapy is more effective than Metformin monotherapy, which proves thatacupuncture is an insulin-sensitizer and is able to improve IR through different mechanisms, includingweight loss, improvement of inflammatory markers, lipid profiles and Adipokines.
