Ultraviolet irradiation is widely used for disinfecting wastewaters that are beingreused or discharged into receiving bodies of water. The advantages of UVdisinfection are that it does not produce a chemical residual and it inactivates almostall of the viruses, Giardia and Cryptosporidium and it is not affected by ammonia inthe water. If UV disinfection is not applied properly or the wastewater is not treatedto the correct standard then UV will not meet the disinfection requirements. Thispaper will review the various upstream factors that affect the UV disinfection ofwastewater.
