LSC Group Information and Knowledge Management consultants have been actively engaged in all the Warship acquisition programmes of the last 15 years. As each project has passed through the progressive phases of the CADMID lifecycle, a clear pattern has emerged, demonstrating the return on investment that can be expected from implementing a Whole-of-Life Information Management Strategy. It is the purpose of this paper to establish that an effective IKM Strategy can address both the inefficiencies caused by disparate operational cultures present in an extended enterprise and the wastage of intellectual capital caused by poor corporate memory. IKM will enable an enterprise to capture important knowledge and retain it, as an asset of the enterprise, for reuse long after its originators have moved on and the detail of their endeavours has been forgotten.
