STATIC MEASUREMENTS OF USED GOLF BALLS

Golf balls are a vital piece of equipment for every golfer. The consistency of a golf ball's performance is critical for a golfer to develop competency in order to repeatedly obtain desired results. Golfers purchase millions of golf balls each year which is driving a new market for used golf balls. The properties of these used balls, due to age and environment, have been the subject of some debate and this project aims to determine if different storage conditions influence a golf ball's properties. New golf balls were used to test mass and compression number changes caused by different storage conditions that a used ball may encounter. These simulated storage conditions subjected them to varying temperatures and an aqueous environment. The results show a statistically significant change in mass for balls retrieved from water storage and show a statistically significant change in the compression number for balls stored in water and subjected to the longest thermal cycle testing used in this research.
