Creep Behavior of a Sand in Triaxial Compression

Creep deformation characteristics of Hostun sand from France was experimentally investigated.rnSolid cylindrical triaxial specimens aimed with high resolution transducers to measure load (hence stress), axial and radial strains locally were tested. Each specimen, isotropically consolidated by partial vacuum at σ_a = σ_r = 78.4 kPa, was subjected to monotonic axial compression segmentally by using an automated load-control system. Each axial stress segment generally consisted of shearing up to the next predetermined axial stress σ_a level, allowing sufficient time to reduce the creep rate to a negligible value while maintaining the current stress state, loading to the next predeteimined σ_a. and so on. Test results showed that creep increased with increase in shear stress level during monotonic loading and the rate was larger in the major principal stress direction. Creep strain followed the Rowe's stress-dilatancy relationship.
