Response surface models were developed in this study to predict and optimize the performance properties of paste backfill. The studied properties included unconfined compressive strength, slump, solid concentration and the cost (based on cement cost) of the backfill. The developed models were able to represent with accurracy the relationships between the physical (tailings grain size and density) and chemical (cement type and proportion, sulphate content) characteristics of the backfill components (tailings, binder, water) and the above properties. The resulting models led to the development of a computer tool which can help in designing cost-effective paste backfill. The results of this research represent a significant progress in understanding and optimizing paste backfill properties. These advances will greatly contribute to better understand the paste backfill behaviours, reduce the safety hazards associated with underground paste backfilling operations and reduce the backfill production cost. It also provides a more comprehensive engineering approach to the design of cemented paste backfill.
