Three passive methane oxidizing biofilter systems were constructed and operated on the Leduc and District Regional Landfill (Alberta, Canada) for over 1.5 years including two critical winter periods. The goals of the study were to evaluate each filter's performance and to provide critical design parameters and implementation strategies for the full-scale application of this alternative landfill gas (LFG) treatment technology. Results were promising, as methane removal rates were averaging 63%, and in general low LFG surface emissions ( ≤ 15gCH_4/m~(2*)d) were found. The paper and presentation will provide full overview of the conducted study, the main results, problems and outcomes, as well as an outlook into the future.
