A permanent manned presence on the moon requires an integrated agricultural system that does more than produce food. The system should recycle water, air, and biomass. It should maintain a healthy microbial population. It should also be designed to maintain optimal performance, morale, and the health of the crew. The agricultural system should not be a restricted access area but should be integrated with crew living quarters in such a way as to allow maximum crew interaction. Plant selection should be based on multiple criteria not simply food production efficiency.
