This paper provides an account of work conducted for NASA under the sponsorship of the Johnson Space Center. A filament winding technique was evaluated for the construction of large inflatable structures suitable for space applications. The concept of an engineered inflatable structure is described. The capability of these structures to provide large living areas for multiple space applications is addressed, and the potential for inflatable space habitats to become an enabling technology is identified.
