Knowledge Management and Maturity Models: Building Common Understanding

Any organisation which is going to implement a knowledge management function will have a variety of concepts and meanings among the members of the organisation. For the sake of an effective implementation a common language and understanding of the relevant terms, goals and objectives is needed. In order to achieve common understanding it is proposed to use a maturity model. Maturity modelling is a generic approach which describes the development of an entity over time progressing through levels towards a usually idealistic ultimate state. There have already been attempts to build staged knowledge management maturity models. It is argued that there exists no single, universally valid maturity model, though there may be similarities in the ways of implementing knowledge management functions among organisations.
