Helicopter Terrain Awareness Warning Systems were introduced to new helicopters from the early 2000s. The laudableaim was to replicate the reduction in cases of CFIT seen in aeroplane operations following the mandating of GPWS inthe 1970s. Unfortunately current H-TAWS are not optimised for offshore operations.This presentation will discuss the operational issues identified with H-TAWS. It will then outline the evidence-basedresearch which has identified improved Mode 1-6 thresholds and a new mode which will warn crews of a low power/lowairspeed case.These new thresholds were identified using Flight Data Monitoring data. The thresholds have been tested against actualaccident cases and significant increases in warning times identified.Other projects, such as operations to moving decks, DGPS-guided approaches and H-TAWS are in the pipeline. Davidhas been involved with a number of JAA and EASA working groups, committees and other initiatives and, more recently,was heavily involved with the CAA's offshore review.
