The shear strength of concrete can be significantly improved by the use of fibres. The spacing of shear reinforcing or stirrups can be increased as a result of the increased shear strength thus resulting in a reduction in cost. In recent years various test and design methods for steel fibre reinforced concrete have been published. Before these design methods and values can be accepted internationally they have to be tested and proven to take the variability in material behaviour into account. In this investigation up to 135 kg/m~3 stainless steel cast fibres were used in compressive and flexural strength samples as well as in reinforced concrete beams. In this paper results are discussed of tests on beams with different stirrup spacing and fibre contents.
