A three-dimensional analysis is presented for the transversely isotropic piezoelectric rectangular plates with variable thickness. The plate is simply supported at four edges and the piezoelectric field is grounded along the plate edges. The general expressions of displacement fields and piezoelectric fields, which exactly satisfy the governing differential equations and the edge conditions, are derived firstly. The unknown coefficients in the solutions are then determined by using the Fourier sinusoidal series expansion to the boundary equations of the upper and lower surfaces of the plates. The present solutions show a good convergence and the numerical results are presented and compared with those available in the literature. The present method can be applied to the structural controls and other projects with highly accurate demand on stress and displacement analysis such as the design of micro-mechanical apparatuses.
