The paper presents recent research work on electromagnetic levitation at MIT.Results of mathematical modeling of electromagnetic fields, fluid flow and heat transfer are described. Also presented are recent measurements of surface tension and viscosity obtained using an electromagnetic levitation system (TEMPUS) in a microgravity environment. The nucleation of solidification and phase competition in iron based-alloys and the crystal growth kinetics in pure nickel both procesed using a ground-based electromagnetic containerless technique are also examined. The seminal contribution of Professor Szekely in the mathematical modeling of electromagnetic levitation systems is highlighted.
