Emerging Electronic Technologies

Data communication is an enabling technology for many commercial and engineering applications, yet the demands placed on the data communications infrastructure are unrelenting. For example, discussions are taking place on standards development for 40/100Gbps over twisted pair and other developments are looking at 2GHz bandwidth coupled with 100W dc over 100m of structured cabling. Data communications infrastructure engineering needs to be aware of emerging technologies that may have a positive impact on future designs. This paper reviews some of the technologies that are emerging into widespread consumer applications based on exploiting the properties of carbon. Some discussion will be presented on the potential impact these might have on the communications infrastructure. These developments include carbon nanotubes and plastic/printed organic electronics
