The black Aspergillus (Aspergillus section Nigri) has been frequently studied becase of their importance in fermentation, biotechnological application and significance as plant or human pathogens. The taxonomy of Aspergillus section Nigri has been maninly based on the morphological characteristics. Based on conventional methods, the classification of the section has some difficulties and limitation, and other several attempts to classify the section also are debatable. Morphological classification does not always reflect the phylogenetic relationship of the strains. Mitochondrial (mt) DNA is favorable to study the relationship among closely related species because of its fast and constant evolution rate. This time, we try to clarify a phylogenetic relationship in the section Nigri using cytochrome b gene.
