In the last years the increase in marine traffic generatedrnthe necessity of global monitoring for marinernenvironment management in terms of safety, securityrnand fisheries.rnThe increasing number of new satellite-based SyntheticrnAperture Radar (SAR) systems, and the intrinsicrncapability of the transmitted electromagnetic pulses torninteract with the ships and to retrieve its cinematicrncharacteristics, made this instrument particularly fit tornimprove global maritime awareness through the fusionrnwith cooperative data (AIS, VMS, LRIT).rnThe growing need of global maritime awareness gave arnpush to the realization of different projects in thernEuropean context, each one focused on a differentrnparticular objective.rnParticularly useful is the synergy between thernoperational and research aspects, being the goal of thernlast to improve the state of the art in the field of shiprndetection. Two European projects are the key to strivernthis synergy: the project MARitime Security Servicern(MARISS), which implements the operationalrncapability, and the R&D Dolphin projects, which isrnfocused on the deep exploitation of remote sensing datarnand on the technological development of advancedrntechniques for ship detection and classificationrnpurposes, and Seabilla project, which is also dedicatedrnto improve the current ship detection capability and tornfuse all the available information from different datarnsources for border surveillance optimization.rnThis paper introduces the multipurpose Edisoft VesselrnDetection software (EdiVDC) implemented by thernEDISOFT company, which comes from the necessity tornrespect increasingly stringent requirements in terms ofrnship detection.rnThe EdiVDC software is being operationally used in thernframework of the MARISS project and it integratesrnadvanced processing algorithms, developed in the scopernof the Dolphin project with the cooperation of ISEL-ITrn(Instituto de Telecomunica??es), and data simulators,rndeveloped in the context of the Seabilla project,rnimproving the software capability and introducing newrnfunctionalities.rnIn this work we present the functionalities of thernsoftware and the main results achieved with differentrntypes of SAR data.
