Limb emission spectroscopy with the balloon-borne Michelson interferometer for passive atmospheric sounding

Abstract: A cryogenic high spectral resolution Fourier TransformSpectrometer for limb emission measurements from aballoon platform in the mid IR-region is described. Thepayload consists of a line-of-sight stabilizationsystem, a telescope, a double-pendulum-interferometer,a detector system, and fast on-board signal-processingelectronics. Sufficient sensitivity is achieved bycooling the optical system to 200 K with solid carbondioxide, by using liquid helium-cooled detectors, andby splitting up the spectral coverage in bands.Calibration is performed by using space and blackbodymeasurements. Four successful balloon flights have beenundertaken from Aire sur l'Adour, France and Esrange,Sweden between May 1989 and March 1992. All flightshave provided information about a variety of tracegases involved in the ozone depletion process. !5
