This paper presents the findings of a study of 159 Swedish small to medium enterprises (SMEs) that have adopted electronic commerce. The results of the study suggest that SMEs are no longer reliant only on conventional quantitative metrics, such as return on investment when making decisions about investing in technology due to the advent and nature of e- commerce. Instead different organisational factors are also being taken into consideration. The findings of the study presented here suggest that improvements to customer service, internal efficiency and improved competitiveness have become equally important when making e-commerce investment decisions, similar to findings from previous studies in Singapore, Australia and the Asia Pacific region.
