PD (partial discharge) monitoring in combination withntime-resolved measurements is demonstrated to be a suitable tool forninsulation diagnosis. Apart from statistical interpretations ofnphase-resolved PD patterns for fault recognition, description ofnmaterial degradation and prediction of lifetime expectancy is desired.nTime-resolved measurements yield information about physical processesnwithin the insulation and can be used to explain the coherence betweennmeasured PD parameters, their statistical analysis, and the innernprocesses. PD quantities such as inception field strength, maximumnapparent charge, and surface charge at the void walls are calculated andncompared with experimental results. Numerical simulations of PD patternsnfor a void within polyethylene based upon these calculations are in goodnaccordance with measured ones
