SCIENCE FOR RISK REDUCTION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: THE ROLE OF LAW

But if deliberative democracy has such an intuitive appeal, that does not necessarily mean that this form of proceduralisation is the most appropriate to deal with the problems facing law and science and the complex relationship between the factual and the normative in the face of the problems currently confronting our societies. It is really very early days for the development of this new paradigm and much work remains to be done. At the very least, however, this emerging literature and - even emerging practice - provides a clear indication that in these complex fields, law will by no means only be playing a supporting role, but through the development of a procedural orientation can actually enhance the ability of science to cope with issues of risk reduction and sustainable development.
