UK Zero Carbon Homes 2016 - Exemplary Development

In October 2008 the UK government announced very ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 against a 1990 baseline. Consequently the government declared that from 2016 all new homes should be built to zero carbon standard defined in the Code for Sustainable Homes. This paper describes one such British zero carbon residential development which has been designed to achieve Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. Comprehensive information is provided about various environmental aspects of the development. Special attention is given to energy efficiency features and on site renewable electricity and heating solutions. Renewable electricity is provided from solar photovoltaic tiles and renewable heating and hot water will be supplied from an adjacent Energy Centre via a mini district scheme. This Energy Centre contains a biomass boiler, heat pumps and solar thermal collectors plus a spare bay for a future renewable energy technology. The paper also highlights challenges which designers and builders face in delivering houses of the future.
