This paper presents a general monolithic finite element formulation for flow and sensitivity analysis of the unsteady fluid-structure interaction undergoing large displacements.1 We consider incompressible viscous flows and structure undergoing large displacements. The coupled set of equations is solved by a direct implicit FEM using a Newton-Raphson procedure. A pseudo-solid formulation is used to manage the deformations of the fluid domain. The formulation uses fluid velocity, pressure, and pseudo-solid displacements as unknowns in the flow domain and displacements in the structural components. The formulation is first verified on a problem with a closed form solution and then applied to sensitivity analysis of a heaving and pitching flexible foil in a flow.
