Scent-Emitting Image Display Device for an Immersive Virtual Reality System

In order to create an immersive virtual reality system where a high quality of visual images can be provided, we propose a new visual display system which can emit scents through a screen matched with the displayed images. First of all, we analyzed the attractiveness and memories of displayed images to explain the concept of adding scents to images. Next, tiny holes were created in a screen and a blower was placed behind the screen. By doing so, scents were able to be emitted through the front of the screen through the holes by pressurized air from behind the screen. The airflow was controlled by blades tightly attached to the back side of the display.
