The purpose of this project is to develop a tool able to calculate the CO_2 emissions, the global energy consumption aswell as the production costs (variable and fix) for all type of plants (integrated and mini mills) with the following features:- Calculation possible for all different types of shops and plants (e.g. coke plant, electric arc furnace, rolling mill).- All the shops have to be linked among themselves by gases and material flows (e.g. the hot metal produced atthe Blast Furnace can be used in the steel plant but can also be used for making pig iron or being sold).- Calculation of the CO_2 emissions, energy consumption and production costs (variable and fix) shop by shopand for the whole plant.- Global gas balance of the whole plant clearly described and easily readable.- Carbon and iron balances are calculated in each shop to ensure the quality of the results and the consistencyof the input data.- The tool is user friendly and can be used on a classical computer.This excel based tool has firstly been validated in one ArcelorMittal plant (CO_2 emissions, energy consumption andproduction costs (fix and variable)), and has then been used to identify strong and weak points of the plant.Furthermore, it has been used to simulate the effect of new strategies on CO_2 emissions, energy consumption aswell as operating cost:- Effect of minimizing the quantity of scrap used at the Basic Oxygen Furnace,- Effect of using only coke at the Blast Furnace level instead of using both coke and pulverized coal.These two strategies are described in this paper sharing that this tool can be used as a decision tool for both,brownfield and greenfield projects.
