In Petrila mine of Jiu Valley Coal Basin (Romania), the thick coal seam no.3 is mined in horizontal slices with top coal caving methods in longwall faces, supported by individual metallic caps and props. In this paper it is presented the synthesis of geomechanical phenomenon developed around the face no.431, which lead to a methane gas deflagration and the human accidents, in the 15 November 2008. The accident was produced in the starting point of the panel mining. Also, there are presented in detail the accident causes analysis and some technical propositions in order to prevent the arising of these types of phenomenon.
