The challenge of the non-linear

As a young engineer my first exposure to non-linearity and chaotic systems was in the field of analogue copper telephone cable systems spanning the Atlantic. The next occasion was in the design of phase locked looked loop ‘search and lock’, followed by; high speed logic design, optical amplifiers, digital radio, instrumentation, artificial life systems, the logistics of mobile phone and road traffic, workforce management, and many more systems since.
