The paper presents the development and application of an Innovative Combustion System in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler. The boiler is designed to burn a wide range of mixtures of biomass and agromass. It is assumed that, in case of Jaworzno project, the mass content of agromass in the fuel mixture is 20%; occasionally the share of agromass may reach 25%. The new boiler design is characterized, first of all by new geometry of the lower part of the furnace, as well as by modified air distribution system, and a new design of the flue gas duct. Jaworzno Power Plant is one of the largest utility power generator in Poland belonging to Tauron Group and the new biomass fired CFB boiler of 201 t/h steam output will be an important part of its installed capacity. Power producers in EU countries are under pressure to change their fuel mix, that is why this investment along with another 100% biomass fired unit located at Tauron Stalowa Wola Power Plant are so important for Tauron company. The paper shows the most crucial design challenges, as well as practical experience from construction, start-up, commissioning and operation of CFB boiler.
