摘要

Pet cats share their living environment with human, and therefore are exposed to organohalogen compounds (OHCs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). It has been suggested that exposure to OHCs enhance morbidity of feline hyperthyroidism (FH) and acromegaly induced diabetes mellitus [4]. The number of cats diagnosed with FH has increased significantly during the last four decades, and studies have suggested that the pathogenesis of FH involves exposure to goitrogens, including PBDEs and phenolic metabolites such as hydroxylated PBDEs (OH-PBDEs). It is also known that halogenated phenolic compounds such as hydroxylated PCBs (OH-PCBs) and OH-PBDEs competitively bind to the thyroid hormone (TH) transport proteins, and disrupt TH homeostasis.
